Structural Strengthening

Task at Hand

The main focus of this project was the structural strengthening of columns and beams in an existing building. Pothys requested changes to the interior layout of its building in T. Nagar, Chennai, which included adding a staircase, elevators and other facilities, which would lead to additional dead loads over the structural system of the building.

SAVCOR India Pvt Ltd who are experts in structural rehabilitation were employed as the contractor. The main focus was the structural strengthening of columns and beams inside the existing building to accommodate the changes to the layout. The task involved chipping the concrete cover of 34 beams and 21 columns, cleaning the surfaces, drilling holes for anchor reinforcement and encasing the columns and beams in high strength micro-concrete to increase the bearing capacity of the structure. Cracks were filled with low viscous epoxy grout.

DCP SOLUTION

The DCP India Technical Team recommended the use of:

  • Cempatch HM: a non-shrink, high strength micro-concrete which achieves 65 MPa at 28 Days, to encase the columns and beams.
  • Keygrout: a high strength polyester grout for anchoring the reinforcements inside the columns and beams.
  • Quickmast 105: a low viscous epoxy resin based injection grout for the cracks.
